We slipped out to the Parkway yesterday evening just a little more than an hour before sunset.  We knew a system of thunderstorms were marching towards us from the Northwest, and wanted to see their progress.

We also wanted to enjoy the green beauty of the evening.  Something may also have been mentioned about ice cream…..

And as we drove east towards Jamestown, we were struck by the peaceful quiet of the Parkway.  Red winged blackbirds and swallows were our company, and a few late evening bicyclists our only other traffic.

Sky on moving water, broken only with the concentric rings made by fish striking insects on the surface, held our gaze.  Marsh plants have grown tall over these months of summer, topped now with seedheads.  The push-ups of winter magically disappeared.

Baby deer grazed along the roadsides and in the broad, mowed fields near the river.

It was a hazy, grey green we found last night; but no less vibrant than the clear sun-kissed green of earlier hours.  And no less beautiful, especially as the moon rose bright in the evening sky between the gathering clouds.

The storm missed us.  Although it seemed to be moving in, it stayed to our north and then headed out across the Eastern Shore.  We smelled the rain, but never felt it, and made it home just as darkness settled over the garden.

By then, the lightening bugs had risen from their resting places to fill the air with bright flashes of golden light.  Bats swooped across the road, gathering their dinner.  Lights shone in neighbors’ windows.  Frog song and insect chirping greeted us as we parked and made our way back inside; the living music of a summer evening.

    • Well I’m happy to find another who loves coconut! Have you ever had a ‘bad’ dish with coconut? Whether in a pie, a curry, a beverage or ice cream- coconut just makes things wonderful 😉 Thank you for your kind words on the photos. And thank you for visiting Forest Garden 😉

      • You are welcome it’s a lovely blog and No , I haven’t I drink coconut juice nearly every day. I have lots in my garden and the soft flesh is lovely just to scoop out and eat. That’s the beauty of living where it’s tropical. I loved coconut even before I lived but now I use it in everything even coconut flour for cooking. 🙂

        • I would be happy to have dinner with you anytime 😉 That sounds like such a wonderful way to live and to cook. We use coconut milk instead of dairy milk and I use it for cooking whenever possible. An Asian friend introduced me to powdered coconut and keeps me supplied 😉 We enjoy coconut water with pulp at our favorite Thai restaurant, along with coconut curry. I’m grateful coconut has become easier to purchase and use here in N. America. However, that said, I’m still partial to any combination of coconut with chocolate! Than you for writing, and for your follow. Giant hugs, WG ❤ ❤

          • Thank you I also cook with Coconut oil as you can heat it too much higher temperatures and it does’nt change like other fats and become harmful too health also the food is so much tastier if it;s meant to be crispy then it sure is even mu husband who is the fussiest man to walk this earh if you use something new and tell him well immediatelly he says I don’t like that and thats it so I just do things now and he loves food cooked in coconut oil. It is probaly easier to obtain here. I have used powdered coconut and it’s great, I’ll keep an eye out for recipes with coconut and post them the one I am posting today is a salad mad with Thai grapefruit but that has toasted coconut in it so if you buy shredded coconut just toast it the recipe explains.             • Massive hugs back to you 😉 We fry very little, but I will choose coconut oil the next time we do. i have a jar of it and really wasn’t sure how to use it. I normally saute in olive oil. We are always looking for interesting new recipes 😉 I am looking forward to seeing your salad recipe later, as it sounds simply delicious ❤ ❤

  4. I feel as refreshed as if I had taken this little getaway myself. How was the ice cream?

    • Coconut chip, Rickii, so amazingly smooth and delicious. It was so rich I couldn’t finish mine. Thank goodness my willing partner was there to assist. 😉 Do you have Bruesters near you? There is a chain of them in this area. All of their ice cream is made freshly on the premises each day. The list of flavors changes constantly, so you never know what you’ll find. A real treat 😉 So glad you were able to ride along with us 🙂 Interestingly, the big birds were in hiding. We finally spotted two Ospreys perched in a tree, but no other eagles or herons-

      • Our local hot spot for ice cream is Salt & Straw. People line up around the block, even in rotten weather, to sample their unusual flavors. My favorite, so far, was corn (yes, corn ice cream is delicious).

  6. That is such a beautiful area. Our ancestors were fortunate to find such a place. Struggles yes, but they made it. You have recorded it so nicely.
