Finding our Hydrangea shrubs covered in beautiful flowers has been a special joy for us this season. It is the first time they have flowered in two years.

We celebrate this hedge of Hydrangeas, which grows across the front of our home, when it is covered in blossoms. Some years we enjoy their bounty for several months. Others we miss them because of winter’s damage to their buds, or because they are grazed by miscreant deer who find their way into the garden.
~

This area of Virginia used to be reliably warm enough in winter to support our Hydrangea macrophylla shrubs without worry. Our unusually cold winters lately have taken their toll. All of our potted Hydrangeas on the deck were lost last winter, despite getting pulled up close to the house, out of the wind.

And so we celebrate the survivors, here studded with the first stems of Lavender to bloom this summer.

The antique coffee pot belonged to my partner’s mother. It lost its lid along the way before it found its way to our home, and so it can be enjoyed filled with flowers.
Our minerals this week are these little green pebbles of Malachite.

That’s such a lovely pale blue Hydrangea! I bought myself one in a pot to enjoy all summer, but don’t know if I have a good spot to plant it out… they are okay over winter once established here in the ground, but not in pots… Enjoy your lovely blooms!
Gardening is filled with risks of all sorts, isn’t it Cathy? We are always having to make choices. The deer are so aggressive with the hydrangea that I was keeping my special ones in pots, out of reach, to protect them. That worked fine all summer, but the shrubs would obviously have fared better planted in the ground during winter. I have not replaced them, and will need a better system in place before I do. I hope your new Hydrangea finds its place in your garden 😉
Your Hydrangeas make a splash in that beautiful silver coffee urn. I’m glad they made it through trial by weather and deer this year! I know the disappointment of flower disappearances. For the 2nd year in a row, my bearded Iris have chosen not to bloom, for which I’m blaming our limited winter rain and my own miserly irrigation practices.

I love the blue hydrangea with violet undertones – so pretty. A friend gave me a lacecap and another one last year. I’m hoping they will produce this summer – fingers crossed!
Fingers crossed 😊 I fed these guys with Holly Tone but they aren’t very blue . I like the violet undertones , too.
Lucky you to have blue mophead hydrangeas…they do not like my weather but I love them! Stunning vase.

I never have much luck using hydrangeas as cut flowers (they get all wilty). What’s your secret?
That is a good question, Rickii. I have honey in the water- but these sat for several hours in a tall glass of warm tap water before I began working with them. We sometimes have them dry in place when we arrange them. The water just evaporates, and the flowers remain; especially in the autumn.
