November 24, 2014 sunset 013

The sun setting over the pond lit the sky tonight with rich gold and pink, brilliant yellow and purple.

Storm clouds moved in this afternoon.  High winds whipped the leaves into swirls and eddies, stripping branches bare and leaving piles of leaves in odd places around the house and garden.

I was sweeping leaves off the deck when a sudden wash of color caught my attention.  Sunset.

November 24, 2014 sunset 016

And the first sunset we’ve seen clearly here since spring, when those same leaves burst out of their tight winter buds.

What a view we have when we can see the bright sky unobscured, and sunset’s reflections in the pond.

November 24, 2014 sunset 018

It is the sunset of the day; the sunset of the year.

The season of light is fast upon us.

Light shining through winter’s darkness, as above, so below.

“May it be a light to you in dark places,

when all other lights go out.”

  1. Your calendar came today and I love it! Beautiful photos, nice quotes and I love the notations – some of them are great – like Organize Your Home Day (I need that!) or Faerie Day, Audacity to Hope Day, or American Chocolate Week – I’ll love celebrating that one! 😉 Thanks so much, I look forward to hanging it on my wall for 2015.

  2. So beautiful photos and lovely writeup…liked it..Thanks, Suyash

  3. When I saw your first photo, I thought we must have been looking at the same sky at about the same time. I finally forced myself outside yesterday to enjoy the “warm” weather before it disappeared. It was wonderful to walk about, immersing myself in the land, water and sky. I ran my camera battery down! Been busy so I haven’t even had a chance to download them. I need to be more disciplined like you! 😉
#2 photo reminds me of landscape painting from the 1800s a la Bierstadt.
    Happy cooking!

    • We probably were looking at the same sky at the same time 😉 I get that feeling sometimes from Robin’s photos, too. Just a lovely day yesterday. I took a walk with some friends and enjoyed getting out into the garden. This morning was nice too- just very overcast. I’ll look forward to seeing your photos when you have a chance to work with them. It definitely takes some uninterrupted time, doesn’t it? Yes, cooking tomorrow. We were given a beautiful pecan pie as a gift today, so cross “dessert” off of the to do list… 😉 Best wishes, WG

  4. I love the way the golden light seems to be pouring like a river through the trees. Beautiful images, WG. 🙂

    • It was a beautiful evening, Robin. And yes, it does look like a river of golden light flowing through the trees. What a poetic way you describe it, Robin 😉 We enjoy this view for the next few months, and it makes sunset an occasion to anticipate 😉 Best wishes, WG

  5. Is it not a blessing to be aware of the moment when the light, the colour , the hues shift and dance as the sun sets? It is from such awareness that the rich tapestry of a life lived emerges….

    Great post!

    • Thank you, Shakti. It is indeed- these are the moments (the cracks, as Castenada might call them) when beauty permeates our lives. Best wishes to you for Thanksgiving weekend, and the gift of time for those things most important to you. In gassho, WG

  6. I love your pictures, they are beautiful! great idea on the calendar, looks like you captures some really nice pictures this year 🙂 I received my American Hosta Society calendar over the weekend, all hostas and hosta gardens. Happy Thanksgiving!

    • What fun, Michael 😉 I have “Monet’s Passion, the Gardens at Giverny” for my desk calendar this year. The Hostas you sent are still going strong. I’ve enjoyed them. Will transplant to larger pots this year. I’ll start cooking tomorrow. You? Best wishes, WG
