Have you ever considered,
It is only by digging deeply into the Earth,
That beauty rises higher and higher towards the sky?
Growing things show us the dimensions of our world:
Roots penetrating Earth and branches reaching skyward
Teach us, “Above and Below.”
Vines scampering across the Earth from their roots,
Outwards in all directions
Teach us, “Forward and Behind.”
New branches emerging from sturdy trunks
Teach us, “North, South, East and West”
As the reach out for the sun.
And watching seeds swell and crack,
Then send out their first tiny leaves,
And later grow into a mighty and fruitful plant
Teaches us, “Time.”
Plan for it;
Wait for it;
Trust it to unfold in its own season.
We are brought into touch
With all of the dimensions of our world,
We gardeners;
Even the void;
The Center;
The one which encompasses all.
How you might ask?
Sit in your garden,
Listening to wasps and bees,
Smelling the sweetness of the breeze,
Accepting sun or rain,
Noticing the perfect beauty of every unfolding leaf
and bud;
Naming nothing;
Changing nothing;
And you will know.
